Nothing About (2025), a Poem by William S. Kilgore

nothing here to see,
there are
weightier matters
in circulation
amongst women and men
far more capable
of the kinds of flicker-events
that start forests blazing.
here's only two sticks, with
lack of friction.
unmatched at frustrating
dry kindling,
several live matches
could change
a dynamic growing tiresome
for less capable
would-be spark-kindlers,
burdened by blazes unstarted.
gawkers light cigarettes to
watch the fail.
so cold it is, without flickering
warm fires
transforming the air,
enveloping recipients
growing tired of a dynamic
of impaired-in-beginnings,
unmade in resilient darkness.
emperors ascending further
than temperatures.
nothing here to see,
vision failing
circulation of routine
miseries matched
by the graphic inevitability
of impaled-in-endings,
unresilient to the fading light.
things. things that drag us away,
screaming in dark lostness.
Dr. William Kilgore is a sociology professor and theologian residing in Houston, Texas. After nearly 30 years as an academic, William began writing poetry in August, 2024 while at home recovering from a kidney transplant, at the age of 56. This opened up a door to a new way of contemplating things that was entirely new to him. In particular, and similar to journaling practices, writing poetry deepened William's faith, helping him to think through devotional, theological, and emotional issues in his thoughts. Writing primarily for himself, some friends and family encouraged him to seek publication
